Land management

Matlock Town Council is grateful for the vital funding from the Culture Recovery Fund for Heritage and the Heritage Stimulus Fund. This grant will allow the Council to continue its work to care for historically significant open spaces in the town and for its headquarters and community centre, the Imperial Rooms. The Town Council is responsible for the upkeep and management of various pieces of land throughout the Town including Denefields, Well Field Allotments, Bailey’s Tump on Asker Lane and the Diana Memorial Garden on Bakewell Road. A full list of the Council’s Landholdings is available here.

Wild Thyme Garden

Matlock Town Council will be working with The Connection Space CIC to develop and care for the Wild Thyme Garden, on the junction between Wellington Street and Cavendish Road. The Council is already partnered with Groundwork who work with volunteers in this space too, and The Connection Space CIC will be a very welcome addition to the team.

The Connection Space CIC is a small not for profit Community Interest Company based in Matlock.  It aims to provide therapeutic, active and creative projects in support of mental health and wellbeing, across the life span, including for people living with dementia.  It also aims to provide valuable and meaningful volunteering roles and carer support.

It is hoped that The Connection Space CIC volunteers will help with gardening activities whilst supporting and encouraging the nature that thrives within it, such as creating bird feeders and insect hotels.  The local community will be encouraged to access and engage with this attractive outside space to experience the benefits to health and well-being that being outside amongst nature brings.  Matlock Town Council, Groundwork and The Connection Space are all committed to sustainable planting and encouraging biodiversity and will share progress of the project on social media.

Footpaths

Unusually for a Town Council, our small outdoor team are also responsible for the general maintenance of 26 miles of footpaths on behalf of Derbyshire County Council. Our teams ensure they are kept litter free and accessible.

If you wish to report a problem with a foothpath in Matlock, please contact Derbyshire County Council with the precise location of the path. They will then contact us if it is one of the paths we look after.

Tree Charter

We are proud to be a Woodland Trust Tree Charter Branch. The Town Council has a Tree Management Strategy which has been in place since 2018. We are supportive of tree planting schemes and the proactive management of trees in the town.
