What We Do

Following the re-organisation of Local Government in 1974, Matlock Town Council was formed in 1983.  Town and Parish Councils, are the first tier of Local Government in this Country.  Although Matlock is generally accepted to include Tansley, Matlock Bath, Cromford, Bonsall and Darley Dale, these areas have their own Parish or Town Councils.  As a result Matlock Town Council’s jurisdiction extends only to the Town Centre, Matlock Bank, Hurst Farm, Matlock Green, Matlock Town, Starkholmes and Riber.

The second tier is  Derbyshire Dales District Council which covers almost a third of the mainly rural parts of the County including the towns of Matlock, Ashbourne, Bakewell, Wirksworth and Darley Dale and over 100 villages.

The third tier is Derbyshire County Council which has responsibilities for the whole of Derbyshire apart from the City of Derby.

The Police, Fire and Ambulance services have their own administrations and at the moment are either County or regionally based.  As a matter of interest, both the offices of the District Council and County Council are situated in Matlock.

Who does what?

The lists below are by no means exhaustive, but are intended to give an indication of the responsibilities of each individual Council.
