Heritage and conservation in Matlock

Matlock has a wealth of significant historic buildings and heritage sites. Further information on these can be found in a number of places, which we have provided links to below.

Matlock Civic Association run a blue plaque scheme in the town – a blue plaque is a permanent sign installed to commemorate a link between that location and a famous person, event, or former building on the site.

Derbyshire Dales District Council provide details of the conservation areas, scheduled monuments and listed buildings within the town.

Lumsdale Valley

The Lumsdale Valley, on the edge of Matlock, is a scheduled monument consisting of industrial mill ruins and managed woodland owned by the Arkwright Society.

Cromford Mills

Situated just south of Matlock Sir Richard Arkwright’s Cromford Mills is part of the Derwent Valley Mills UNESCO World Heritage Site. 

You are able to visit the world’s first successful water powered cotton spinning mill, built in 1771 and discover how the Derwent Valley changed the world in the 18th Century with the growth of the British cotton industry.
